What Every Physician Needs to Know About Breastfeeding (WEPNTK Course I and II) Course I aims to fill the knowledge and clinical skills gaps that many physicians report in their training. Course II builds on the foundation presented in WEPNTK and open to individuals who have already participated in Course I.
Physicians, medical students, residents, fellows, and all members of the health care team, especially those who have direct interaction with breastfeeding families are welcome to attend.

Global Objectives:
- Describe the role of the physician in breastfeeding support.
- Counsel women and families about the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers, children, and society.
- Manage labor in a manner that minimizes interference with breastfeeding initiation.
- Describe the importance of skin-to-skin in the immediate postpartum period.
- Facilitate breastfeeding based upon newborn reflexes and cues.
- Describe physiologic control of milk production.
- Assess adequacy of infant milk intake.
- Identify the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
- Evaluate and manage infant jaundice and poor weight gain.
- Provide a differential diagnosis of breast lesions and sore nipples.
- Recognize the unique characteristics of the late preterm infant that may interfere with breastfeeding.
- Implement breastfeeding-friendly policies in clinical practice.
- Use breastfeeding technology appropriately to support lactation and milk production/transfer.
