What Every Physician Needs to Know Part I
Welcome to the next generation of What Every Physician Needs to Know I LIVE. This full-day course is part of a member-generated and member-led reboot of the WEPNTK franchise and represents the debut of newly designed content. This course aims to address the knowledge and clinical skills gaps that many healthcare providers report during their training.
Who is this for? This course was developed by physicians for physician-level learning, and we welcome any members of the healthcare team who want to dive deeper into the front-line diagnosis and management of breastfeeding and lactation. This course has been developed and presented to participants in conjunction with the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s Annual International Conference since 2001. The course, including completion of the pre-work, meets staff educational criteria for the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
What’s different?
Registrants will have access to an early version of a new basic breastfeeding online introductory course, which will be mandatory as pre-work.
The LIVE offering will kick off with a half-day of new didactic content designed for the frontline clinician who wants to go beyond the basics to develop competency in the diagnosis and management of common breastfeeding challenges.
The second half of the day-long event will feature new case study discussions and skills stations. Learn how to build a differential, communicate with your diverse patient population, manage common issues, use devices to assist dyads, and collaborate with others in the field to grow your network.
The course will be team-taught by physicians from around the world who are leading the overall content update. They come from a variety of specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, pediatrics, and neonatology.

Building on the foundational knowledge from What Every Physician Needs to Know About Breastfeeding I, this advanced full-day course is designed for healthcare providers ready to deepen their expertise in breastfeeding management. To ensure a seamless learning experience, participation in Part 1 is a prerequisite for this course.
What Every Physician Needs to Know About Breastfeeding II takes your skills to the next level by exploring complex and specialized topics. This course offers an in-depth look at the unique challenges of breastfeeding mothers and their infants and provides practical, evidence-based strategies to address them.
Through interactive case study-based sessions led by seasoned physicians across various specialties, you’ll engage with the latest research and clinical protocols, refining your approach to breastfeeding support. Whether you’re managing cases involving low-tone babies or navigating the intricacies of breastfeeding for mothers with autoimmune diseases, this course equips you with the tools to deliver exceptional care.
Who Should Attend? This course is ideal for physicians who have completed Part I or an equivalent program from another organization and are looking to further enhance their expertise. This program is intended for physicians, residents, or fellows directly involved in breastfeeding support and management.

Mastitis Convening – Clinicians Informing Research Lactational Mastitis Research Summit
The Lactational Mastitis Research Summit is a focused, half-day, action-oriented convening designed to bring clinicians together to help shape the future of mastitis research.
Mastitis affects a significant proportion of breastfeeding families, yet important questions remain about its causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Clinicians are on the front lines of this care and bring critical insight into what we still do not understand, where current approaches fall short, and which questions matter most to patients and practice.
We are hearing from our members that the ABM mastitis spectrum protocol (Mitchell et al., 2022) has transformed how clinicians understand and care for the inflamed breast. With Vida Health, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine is building on that progress by starting a broader conversation: What do clinicians need to know to provide the best possible care, and what research is needed to answer those questions?
This summit is an opportunity for clinicians to help set that agenda. Rather than focusing primarily on reviewing existing research or developing a specific study protocol, the convening will create space to work together to identify the most important unanswered questions in mastitis care and determine where research can have the greatest impact.
Through expert-led discussion and facilitated collaboration, participants will:
- Identify the questions and challenges clinicians encounter most often in caring for patients with mastitis
- Surface gaps in knowledge where research could meaningfully improve clinical care
- Prioritize research questions across etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and patient experience
- Consider what kinds of evidence and research approaches are needed to answer those questions
- Identify opportunities for clinicians, researchers, and patients to work together to advance the field
- Begin building a shared research agenda to guide future studies, collaborations, and funding priorities
The goal is to move from “What does the research currently tell us?” to “What do we need to learn next?”— and to ensure that clinicians and patients have a meaningful voice in determining those priorities.
A First Step in Ongoing Work
The summit represents the beginning of an ongoing effort to strengthen the scientific foundation of mastitis care. The research agenda developed through this conversation can serve as a foundation for future studies, collaborations, funding strategies, and, ultimately, improvements in clinical guidance and patient care.
By bringing together clinicians, researchers, and patient perspectives, the summit aims to create a shared understanding of what the field needs to learn next—and to build the relationships and momentum needed to turn those priorities into action.
