The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine is committed to ensuring that all of its work aligns with the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

The Code Compliance Committee plays a critical role in this effort by reviewing and monitoring activities to ensure consistent adherence to the Code. This work protects the integrity of ABM’s programs and reinforces its commitment to evidence-based practice in breastfeeding and lactation medicine. 

About the Role

The Code Compliance Committee is responsible for ensuring that ABM activities comply with the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

Committee members review and assess activities across the organization to confirm alignment with the Code. This includes evaluating external engagements, partnerships, and educational programming to ensure that compliance is applied consistently.

Key areas of responsibility include:

• Reviewing exhibitors, sponsors, and advertisers
• Evaluating speakers and educational programming for compliance
• Assessing potential grant funders
• Providing guidance on Code-related questions and situations
• Developing and maintaining Code compliance guidance and resources

The committee focuses specifically on Code adherence. Broader governance issues, including general conflicts of interest not related to the Code, fall under the purview of other ABM governance bodies.

What You’ll Contribute

As a committee member, you will:

• Review applications for sponsorship, exhibits, and partnerships for Code compliance
• Evaluate speakers and educational content for alignment with the Code
• Provide input on situations requiring interpretation of the Code
• Contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and guidance related to Code compliance
• Support consistent and thoughtful application of the Code across ABM activities

Who Should Apply

We are seeking medical doctor members who:

• Have a strong understanding of the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes or a willingness to learn
• Have experience in clinical practice, research, education, or policy
• Are thoughtful and objective in evaluating complex situations
• Value consistency, fairness, and organizational accountability
• Are comfortable applying defined standards in a structured review process

Time Commitment

• Participation in regular committee meetings and review discussions

• Timely review of materials related to speakers, sponsors, and other activities

• Ongoing collaboration with committee members and staff

• Committee term: Three-year term, with staggered rotations to ensure continuity

• Terms begin and end on the final day of the ABM Annual International Meeting.

Committee work is ongoing throughout the year as review requests and compliance considerations arise.
